Description
TOPS' previous album, Picture You Staring (2014), featured an "isolated" soft pop rock sound, limited by their Montreal recording location. After performing around 100 shows in 2015, they gained clarity on their communication and performance as a band. Their recording approach evolved, with the different space and minimalism in Sugar at the Gates influenced by 1990s R&B.
