Description
In late 1972, Gene Clark was invited to join a Byrds reunion for Asylum Records. Though David Crosby was nominally in charge, the album inadvertently became a showcase for Clark, who took the lead on two Neil Young covers and two original tracks. Impressed by Clark’s contributions, David Geffen signed him as a solo artist.
While gearing up for his solo debut, Clark briefly joined Roger McGuinn’s backing group and the two even shared a Hollywood Hills home. During a Troubadour gig with McGuinn, Clark debuted “Silver Raven,” a song he’d keep in his repertoire. It was inspired by a news story about an enigmatic satellite from beyond our solar system. Clark noted it was receiving signals 100 years ahead of our technology.
On the surface, the album might seem uplifting, but give it a few spins, and you'll find a subtle, melancholic haze that wraps around you like a well-worn blanket.
