Description
A Japanese POW camp in Java, 1942: the complex power struggles between British prisoners (David Bowie, Tom Conti) and their Japanese captors (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Takeshi Kitano) unfold through ritual, violence, and an ambiguous mutual fascination. Nagisa Oshima's visually ravishing film — with its legendary Sakamoto score — is a profound, formally daring study of culture, authority, and desire across enemy lines.
