Description
Odessey and Oracle is the second studio album by English rock band The Zombies, released in the UK on April 19, 1968, by CBS Records, and in the US on July 15, 1968, by Date Records. Recorded primarily between June and August 1967 at EMI (now Abbey Road Studios) and Olympic Studios in London, the album came about after the band, having been dropped by Decca Records, funded the sessions themselves.
Despite their efforts, initial releases of singles and the album were met with little fanfare, leading to the band's quiet dissolution. However, a third single, "Time of the Season," unexpectedly became a hit in the US in early 1969, thanks to CBS staff producer Al Kooper who championed its release.
Odessey and Oracle eventually garnered critical acclaim and developed a devoted cult following, becoming one of the most celebrated albums of the 1960s. It was ranked 100th on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and slid to 243rd on the 2020 revision.
Through its melodic sweetness, this album hides the sound of a band whose end was just a few months away.
