Sunday at the Village Vanguard was recorded live on June 25, 1961, at New York City's Village Vanguard. That day, the trio performed five sets—two in the afternoon and three in the evening—each lasting around 30 minutes and featuring four to five pieces. Tragically, this would be the final recording of the Bill Evans Trio with bassist Scott LaFaro, who passed away in a car accident just eleven days later.
