Description

In March 1960, while on tour in Europe, Miles Davis bought a soprano saxophone for John Coltrane. Though the instrument had been popular in early jazz, notably used by Sidney Bechet, it had become rare by the 1950s, except for Steve Lacy. Coltrane began playing it during his summer club dates. After leaving Davis's band, Coltrane formed the first version of the John Coltrane Quartet for regular bookings at New York's Jazz Gallery in the summer of 1960, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Sessions at Atlantic Studios just before Halloween yielded "Village Blues" for Coltrane Jazz and the entire My Favorite Things album, along with tracks later released as Coltrane Plays the Blues (1962) and Coltrane’s Sound (1964). According to biographer Lewis Porter, Coltrane called "My Favorite Things" his favorite recording.
