Description
In 2021, Eddie Chacon and John Carroll Kirby spent two weeks in Ibiza, writing the first half of Sundown with a rented Fender Rhodes in a hillside home overlooking Siesta Beach. Influenced by Pharoah Sanders’ “Greeting to Saud,” they prioritized simplicity over virtuosity. The album was completed at 64 Sound Studios in Los Angeles with contributions from Logan Hone (flutes, sax), Elizabeth Lea (trombone), Will Logan (drums), and David Leach (percussion). Chacon and Kirby first collaborated on Pleasure, Joy and Happiness (2020), an album that unexpectedly revived Chacon’s career decades after his 1990s success with Charles & Eddie. Now 59, Chacon sees Sundown as “the follow-up I never thought I would get to make.”
