Description
#Notes of Forestry is an ambient and minimalist album by Japanese artist Motohiko Hamase, originally released in 1988 by Newsic, a label associated with Tokyo’s Wacoal Art Center (Spiral). The album, which is part of WRWTFWW Records' ESPLANADE SERIES, is reissued on vinyl, sourced from the original masters and includes liner notes from the artist.
Motohiko Hamase, a jazz bassist turned experimental musician, conceived #Notes of Forestry as a blend of free-form electronics, ethereal percussion by Yasunori Yamaguchi, and evocative piano contributions by Satsuki Shibano. The album stands out for its vibrant, sometimes eerie soundscapes and represents a key work in the Japanese ambient genre.
Hamase's artistic philosophy behind the album is centered on the concept of musical freedom, where music transcends language and resonates deeply within the musician. This notion reflects his approach to creating a sound that offers an escape and expands on the explorations of other notable Japanese ambient releases like Midori Takada’s Through the Looking Glass, Satoshi Ashikawa’s Still Way, and Yutaka Hirose’s Nova.
