After a two-decade hiatus, Jim O’Rourke’s Moikai returns with Spectral Evolution, a landmark work by Rafael Toral. Known for 1990s guitar drone classics Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field, Toral later traded the guitar for custom electronics in his Space Program, blending jazz-inspired phrasing with experimental soundscapes. Since 2017, he’s fused these innovations with a renewed focus on long tones and a return to the electric guitar. Spectral Evolution distills Toral’s career into a bold synthesis of lush harmonies, experimental electronics, and jazz-inspired structures. Tracks like ‘Intro’ and ‘Changes’ mix modulated feedback with classic chord progressions slowed to immersive extremes, while ambient ‘Spaces’ and dynamic textures evoke everything from David Tudor’s live electronics to Loren Connors’ emotive guitar solos. Three years in the making, this is Toral’s most sophisticated and essential album yet.
