Description

Number-three hitman Hanada (Jō Shishido) develops an erotic obsession with the smell of boiling rice at the exact moment his career begins its terminal decline. Seijun Suzuki's anarchic, formally reckless yakuza film — made for Nikkatsu studio, which promptly fired him for it — demolishes every convention of the genre it pretends to inhabit. Shot in gorgeous black-and-white Scope by Kazue Nagatsuka, it remains one of the most purely cinematic films ever made in Japan: a work of sustained, gleeful formal aggression that influenced filmmakers from Jim Jarmusch to Wong Kar-wai.
