Description
After poor reviews for Common Sense (1975), Prine became frustrated with Atlantic Records for not promoting it. Still respected in the industry, he performed on Saturday Night Live in 1976, replacing the Beach Boys at John Belushi’s request. In 1977, he signed a three-album deal with Asylum Records and worked with his friend Steve Goodman to produce Bruised Orange, recorded at Chicago Recording Company from January to March 1978. Prine had first recorded the album with Jack Clement in Nashville but was unhappy with the results, saying it didn’t capture the sound they heard in the studio. After considering several major producers in Los Angeles, he ultimately asked Goodman to produce the album. The record includes “If You Don’t Want My Love,” co-written with Phil Spector.
