Description

Dunya, the title of Mustafa’s breathtakingly tender debut album, translates from Arabic to “the world in all its flaws.” It's an ambitious theme for a young songwriter, but Mustafa approaches it through a deeply personal lens. Addressing subjects like religious devotion, childhood trauma, gang violence, and romantic intimacy, he blends genres and moods, crafting folk songs rich with novelistic details that feel like a series of personal breakthroughs. Mustafa’s writing stands out for its piercing simplicity, making any story feel as raw and earnest as a love song. With a hushed delivery that commands silence, he evolved from a Toronto child prodigy reciting poems to a behind-the-scenes songwriting force, and now, on Dunya, a full-fledged auteur. “I’m trying to preserve and celebrate the ordinary life in the hood,” Mustafa says of his lyrical inspiration. The songs, drawn from his upbringing and beyond, balance disarming simplicity with emotional depth.

Featuring collaborators like Aaron Dessner, Rosalía, Clairo, and Nicolas Jaar, alongside his creative partner Simon Hessmann, the album showcases a distinct voice ready for the masses. Even when addressing the world, Mustafa speaks only for himself—a story just beginning.
