Based on the true story of William Walker (Ed Harris), an American mercenary and filibuster who invaded Nicaragua in 1855 with a small private army, declared himself president, and reinstated slavery before being executed in 1860. Alex Cox's anarchic, deliberately anachronistic anti-imperialist Western — shot in Nicaragua during the Contra War, with helicopters and Zippo lighters and Mercedes-Benz cars appearing in the 1850s — is one of the most audacious and politically charged American films of the Reagan era. Joe Strummer's score is magnificent.
