Description
Eastern Sounds is a studio album by jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer Yusef Lateef, released in April 1962 by Prestige Records on their Moodsville imprint. Recorded in September 1961, the album showcases Lateef's exploration of Middle Eastern music within a hard bop framework, performed with a quartet featuring Barry Harris on piano. The opening track highlights Lateef playing the Chinese globular flute, or xun. This fusion of genres was a continuation of Lateef's earlier work, as seen in his 1957 album Prayer to the East. Along with original compositions, Eastern Sounds includes covers of film themes from Spartacus and The Robe, which were later sampled by producers Nujabes and Blockhead.
