Description
Two young brothers in a Tokyo suburb go on a hunger strike — refusing to speak to anyone — after their parents decline to buy them a television set. Yasujiro Ozu's delightful domestic comedy, his only sound film in color shot in the Academy ratio, uses this small rebellion as a lens through which to observe an entire neighborhood's habits of politeness, gossip, and small social ceremony. A film of irrepressible warmth, filled with fart jokes and genuine tenderness in equal measure.
