Description
TV news cameraman John Cassellis (Robert Forster) moves through the traumatic summer of 1968 — the assassination of Robert Kennedy, the Democratic National Convention, the police riot in Chicago — filming everything, feeling nothing, until he can no longer maintain his detachment. Haskell Wexler's singular hybrid of fiction and documentary, shot in the streets of Chicago with real events unfolding around the actors, is the defining film about media, complicity, and the violence of observation. The moment the teargas explodes is cinema history.
